Chivalry
A code of honour that said that a knight should be brave and have good manners.

Cloisters
A square in the centre of the monastery where monks liked to walk and pray.

Craftsperson
A person who has learned a craft.

Curfew
The time when all fires had to be out in the town.

Dowry
Money or goods that a woman gave to her husband when they got married.

Feudal system
This is how land was owned in the Middle Ages.

Freeman
A man who paid rent and tax to the lord but could travel as he pleased.

Guild
An organization that every craftsperson had to belong to.

Hawking
Hawks were trained to hunt other birds.

Keep
A large square tower lived in by the lord’s family.

Knight
A nobleman who went into battle on horseback, dressed in armour.

Manor
The house and village where the lord lived.

Monastery
A place where people who had devoted their lives to God lived.

Peasant
An old word for farmer.
