A guaranteed price
A high price that farmers were paid for their produce.

Anti-semitism
Hatred of the Jewish people.

Blitzkrieg
German military tactics involving heavy bombing from the air and rapid tank
movements on the ground.

Bolshevik Party
The party led by Lenin. It was later renamed the Communist Party.

Coalition
A government that is made up of a number of political parties.

Colonies
Countries that are owned by a more powerful country. In 1914, nearly all African countries were controlled by European powers.

Communism
A belief in an equal society that would be achieved by revolution.

Concentration camps
Prisons used for political prisoners and later the Jews of Europe.

Containment
To stop the spread of communism throughout the world.

Decolonisation
European countries give up their colonies.

Demilitarised zone (DMZ)
An area from which troops are forbidden.

Democracy
A political system where the government is chosen by the people in an election held every four or five years.

Dictator
A person who controls a country and makes all of the major decisions.

Diplomacy
Negotiations between countries.
