Act
Another name for a law.

Colony
A territory controlled by another country that is usually far away.

Congress
The American name for parliament.

Constitution
A document that sets out how a country is run.

Convention
Name of the French parliament during the Reign of Terror.

Duties
Taxes on imported goods that make them more expensive.

Loyalist
A supporter of the British government. Most Protestants were loyalists although a large
number of Catholics supported the government as well.

Middle class
People such as businessmen, lawyers and doctors belong to this class.

Radical
A person who agreed with the ideals of the French Revolution.

Rebellion
An organized attempt to overthrow a ruler or government.

Republicanism
It involved the use of violence to end British rule in Ireland.

Revolution
The overthrow of a government.

Sans-culottes
The name given to poor men who wore long trousers instead of kneebreeches which
were worn by the wealthy.
