Other countries such as England and France did not recognise the Treaty of Tordesillas. The English clashed with the Spanish. Led by Sir Francis Drake they attacked the Spanish treasure fleet leaving the New World. The Spanish attacked French and English colonies in North America.
The Dutch conquered many former Portuguese colonies including some of the Spice Islands. They even tried to capture Brazil but failed.
Wars later broke out between the Dutch and the British over colonies. As a result of one of these wars the Dutch exchanged New Amsterdam (New York) for the island of Run in the Spice Islands.
The French and the English were also rivals mainly in America, the Caribbean and India.  The Seven Year’s War saw the French being driven from North America and India, leaving England with the World’s largest empire.
